Miami loses St. Petersburg Bowl in final seconds

FOX19 - Mississippi State blocked a Miami game-winning field goal attempt with five seconds and the RedHawks lost the St. Petersburg Bowl 17-16.

The RedHawks, playing in their first bowl game since 2010, drove inside the Bulldogs' 20 yard line with less than a minute to play, but elected to set up for a field goal attempt instead of trying to score a touchdown. The RedHawks ran two quarterback sneaks to set the ball in the middle of the field for kicker Nick Dowd, but Mississippi State blocked his 38 yard attempt with only seconds remaining.

Miami entered the game as one of the biggest underdogs of the bowl season, but outplayed their SEC opponent the first half, leading 9-0 after two quarters. But, Mississippi State rallied to take the lead early in the fourth quarter with a field goal and a 17-16 lead.

Miami started the season 0-6 and became the first college football team to win their next six after losing their first six games.

Moeller product Gus Ragland finished with 263 yards passing for Miami and two touchdowns.
