Deep Throat Confirmed

Former FBI official Mark Felt was `Deep Throat,' Washington Post says

The Washington Post is confirming that former FBI official Mark Felt was the paper's confidential source known as "Deep Throat."

Felt's leaks provided the newspaper information during the Watergate scandal that led to President Nixon's impeachment investigation and eventual resignation. The paper made its announcement on its Web site after the 91-year-old Felt talked to a lawyer who wrote a magazine article for Vanity Fair. Felt was quoted as telling the author, "I'm the guy they used to call 'Deep Throat."'

Ben Bradlee, who was the key editor at the Post in the Watergate era, said Felt "was a pretty good source." And Bradlee said because of the "quality of the source," he knew the paper was on the right track" in its investigative stories. Felt was the second-in-command at the FBI in the early 1970s.
