Hospitals Room Service

More hospitals offering room service meals to patients

Room service in a hospital? It's a growing trend in the hospital industry -- taking a hotel-like approach to food service.

At St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center in Syracuse, New York, the traditional meal trays are being dumped in favor of room service-style food offerings of chicken Caesar salad, personal pan pizza and Chinese stir fry. Patients pick up the phone, order off a menu and get the food they want, when they want it. Room service at St. Joseph's was launched in the hospital's maternity unit last month with full service expected in two years. Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York, launched room service in 2003.

The National Society for Healthcare Foodservice Management says more than one-fourth of its members are offering room service and another 42 percent plan to do so.
