Xavier advances to Sweet 16 a 6th time in 10 years

(FOX19) -

This marks a 6th Sweet 16 trip since 2008 for the Musketeers after they beat Florida State 91 - 66 Saturday night.

The Seminoles are the No. 3 seed in the NCAA tournament's West Regional, while the Musketeers are No. 11.

Xavier will face the St. Mary's-Arizona winner in the NCAA tournament Sweet 16.

“We had a meeting at the beginning of the year,” Xavier head coach Chris Mack said. “After losing to Wisconsin in the tournament last year, we talked about attacking and finishing. Man, we finished today. I couldn’t be happier for my guys. Our guys played loose and together. There's a belief within this team that we can play with anybody when we play together,” Mack said.

Trevon Bluiett led Xavier with a game-high 29 points. Kaiser Gates added 14 points off the bench. Tyrique Jones added 13 points as another one of the five Musketeers in double figures.

Xavier is 13-1 when it holds its opponents under 70 points.
