Chance of more freezing temps looking quite slim

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

It’s feeling a lot like spring in the Tri-State, but could winter make one final comeback? It won’t happen over the next seven days. Overnight temperatures look to dip no lower than the mid 40s; near normal for this time of year.

The last time we saw temperatures at or below freezing in Cincinnati was Saturday, April 8th. It’s likely this will be our last freeze of the season.

The average date of our last freeze in Cincinnati is April 16th, but this has ranged from as early as March 10th to as late as May 25th.  Both of these dates are extremes though. 80% of the time, our last freeze falls between April 2nd and May 2nd.

It’s not just freezing temperatures that are a concern though. Frost can kill or damage spring blooms as well. Frost can still occur when temperatures are as warm as 37°. The earliest we’ve last seen temperatures this low was March 29th and the latest was May 29th.

Looking at the long range computer models, it appears even lows in the mid 30s will be tough to come by through late April. It’s likely we’ll only see temperatures dip to the low 40s at most. This means that there’s a good chance we’ve also seen our last frost of the season.

That said, if you’re wanting to plant your favorite flowers, wait a little bit longer. Got to watch out for a May surprise. If we get to the start of May and there are no signs of frost in the extended forecast, you’ll be safe to plant.

You can also always go by the rule of not planting until after Mother’s Day. With only a handful of exceptions, this rule has held true.
