CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

A driver was high on heroin when he led police on a chase before a head-on collision with a school bus was sentenced on Friday.

In Nov. 2015, Peter Smeriglio swerved into oncoming traffic, hit a vehicle and then crashed into a bus carrying 30 Sycamore Community School students, police said. No students were injured.

The incident started when an officer attempted to stop Smeriglio, 40, for reckless driving at the corner of Pfeiffer and Montgomery roads. Police said a person bailed out of the car at Radabaugh Road and was later taken into custody as a witness.

Smeriglio continued driving north on Montgomery road before ultimately swerving into the southbound lanes, hitting the vehicle and then school bus near Bethesda North Hospital.

After his arrest, officials determined Smeriglio had a concentration of heroin in his blood.

Smeriglio was sentenced to three years in prison.
