Tech expert: Be on the lookout for hidden cameras disguised as coat hook

A seemingly innocent coat hook inside a home or public restroom could be watching your every move.

Social media has been buzzing with news of hidden cameras disguised as an average coat hanger. The product is sold on Amazon for only $13.

FOX19 NOW Tech Expert Dave Hatter says these cameras can be sold for legitimate security purposes. However, they could be harmful if in the wrong hands.

"You hang this in a hotel room, you hang it in a changing room you hang it in a restroom most people are not going to walk up to look at the coat hook to see if has a little tiny hole in it,” Hatter said.

Last month, similar coat hook cameras were allegedly spotted inside a bathroom in Lousiville. The camera, which was activated by movement, was discovered by a 27-year-old woman when she accidentally knocked it off the wall last October, according to our sister station WAVE3.

"If you have any suspicion whatsoever, go up and carefully check out the device and if it looks like it’s got any kind of holes in it, especially one that would be facing out where it could record, you're going to want to go get someone. Notify someone let them get the authorities," Hatter said.

Cincinnati Police have not reported any incidents involving the camera hooks, but said anyone who knows of a similar situation should contact police.
