HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) -

One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Hamilton Saturday afternoon.

An officer responded to a reported shooting at around 3 p.m. at the Knollwood Crossing apartments on Forest Park Drive, Hamilton Police Chief Craig Bucheit said.

When the officer arrived on scene, he was confronted by an armed male.

"The subject was armed with a fixed blade knife, it was a large knife, described as a butcher knife," said Bucheit.

During a brief confrontation, the officer fired his weapon at the male. It's unknown how many shots were fired.

The male, described to be in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.  He has not been identified.

The officer involved was not injured. His name was not released.

Officials expect to release the identity of the subject and the officer on Monday.

"All life is sacred and so the loss of it under any circumstances and circumstances such as this is tragic," said Bucheit. "There's a family whose somewhere tonight, whose loved one isn't coming home and so that's a matter that we take, we take very seriously and that's why it's important that there is a full and thorough transparent investigation."

The officer involved is being interviewed at the police station, Bucheit said.

He was not wearing a body camera. Investigators will look at cruiser cam, which was near the scene.

Witnesses are being interviewed about the incident.

Police are also investigating the original shooting call the officer responded to, Bucheit said. No other victims were found.

Hamilton Police and other departments have put up crime scene tape around the area to investigate the shooting.
