WEST CHESTER, OH (FOX19) -

Residents in a West Chester neighborhood are not too pleased with Duke Energy's plan to do some tree trimming.

The residents are upset because they can't do anything about it. Duke Energy officials said what they're doing has to be done.

Melanie Staubitz and her husband found out a few days ago that in about a week, her garden may soon be gone for good.

They live near some power lines maintained by Duke Energy.

Duke has plans to cut out the greenery as part of its vegetation management work.

"They're going to destroy my yard and probably those of my neighbors, too," Staubitz said.

Duke Energy leaders said the company performs this type of maintenance regularly on its lines.

It has land easements and right-of-ways along lines like the ones through Staubitz's property.

Because of that, Duke can do its maintenance up to 25 feet from the outermost wire attached to the equipment.

"They've cut this tree one time - topped it. They've done nothing else in all that time. We've been here for 12 years. They've done nothing else, and now they're coming in here because they can," Staubitz said.

Duke officials said trees and limbs cause the most outages.

The company said it has to "do what's best to ensure affordable, reliable and safe electric service" for its customers.

"They know they're coming into people yards who do not want them there, and they're cutting things down that aren't hurting anything," Staubitz said.

A company spokesperson said they expect more government regulations on this type of work soon.
