CINCINNATI (FOX19) -

The Cincinnati Bengals picked John Ross of Washington with the No. 9 draft pick in the first round of the NFL draft Thursday night.

Ross finished his collegiate career with 1,729 years and 22 touchdowns.

He ran a 4.22 40-yard dash, which was the fastest in modern combine history.

"It's impossible not to talk about his speed, but he can stop. That's what's most important. That's where he jumps out on film,” Bengals wide receivers coach James Urban said.

Ross is the second wide receiver selected in the top ten by the Bengals since 2011, when they drafted A.J. Green, who is now a six-time Pro Bowl WR, at No. 4 overall.

“A guy with his speed and ability to make the play over the top really creates an issue defending,” said Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis. “His dynamic speed shows up on tape. When you watch the tape, you can really feel this guy playing. It gives us another option offensively, balances the field some and we’re really excited.”

“My head almost came off my shoulders,” said John Ross on being selected No. 9 by the Bengals. “I believed I would be a top ten pick because I believe in myself.”

Ross will arrive in Cincinnati around noon on Friday and meet the media in the afternoon. Stay tuned to Fox19 NOW for Bengals draft coverage throughout the weekend and extended reaction from Ross on The Final Quarter Friday night.

For the rest of the draft, the Bengals own one second round and third round picks, and two fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh round picks.
