Rafting Death

Boy Scout dies in New Mexico river after falling off raft

A Boy Scout in New Mexico has died after he was thrown from a raft while on an overnight camping trip. Authorities say Chase Hathenbruck was sitting on the edge of a raft on a dangerous stretch of the Animas River when he fell off and was swept away by an undertow. His body was pulled from the river nearly five miles downstream from where he fell in yesterday.

Another scout thrown from the raft was able to swim to shore while others on the raft held on until a rescue boat could reach them. The scouts had planned to get out of the water before reaching a dangerous stretch of the river but were caught too far out.

Another Boy Scout may have drowned this week, at Yellowstone National Park. Searchers have been looking for Luke Sanburg along a 14-mile stretch of the Yellowstone River.
