Cindy Losing Strength

Cindy losing strength, Dennis near hurricane

Forecasters say Cindy is losing strength and has been downgraded from a tropical storm. Officials at the National Hurricane Center in Miami say the tropical depression is centered about 50 miles north-northwest of Mobile, Alabama.

The forecasters say the storm's winds have fallen to about 35 miles-per-hour. It's expected to move over southwest Alabama today. State troopers are urging drivers to use extreme care today, with streets in some southern parts of the state flooded with rain. Louisiana and Mississippi are reporting scattered flooding and power outages that have affected more than a-quarter million customers. The storm hit Louisiana last night and moved into Mississippi this morning.

As Cindy runs out of gas, Tropical Storm Dennis is gaining strength. The Hurricane Center says the storm is near hurricane intensity and could reach that category today or tonight.

Forecasters say it has sustained wind of nearly 70 miles-per-hour as it heads toward Jamaica.
