Family calls for peace after father and mother killed 2 months apart

A family is trying to mend their broken hearts after a father and mother were brutally killed just two months apart on the same Walnut Hills street.

William DeAndre Thomas Jr. would have turned 20 Friday. He was shot to death on Staunton Avenue last week.

The mother of his child, 21-year-old Shawnice Johnson, was fatally stabbed in May.

Thomas' loved ones came together to celebrate his birthday with a balloon launch outside of the Evanston Recreation Center Friday.

As the balloon lifted to the sky, the family prayed for Thomas and Shawnice Johnson along with other victims of violence in the city.

The family said this is the first step in calling for peace.

"Being that it's his birthday it gave them an opportunity to celebrate the his life and turn away from the tragic loss. It did provide some relief but at the end of the day We're still looking for justice," said Kelli Prather.

The crimes are not connected, the family said. Markeisha Elliot has been charged in Johnson's stabbing death.

No arrests have been made in Thomas' death.

The family said they are now planning a march and a community discussion to address the violence plaguing the city.
