Michigan man sends troops books

A man looking for a way to thank US troops for their service has collected and sent about seven-thousand books to servicemen and women. Dick Mellen says he wanted to do something to ease the soldiers' burdens.

The Troy, Michigan, man gathers overstock books from libraries and other donations to send overseas and to veterans hospitals. Mellen began the project about two years ago and now runs the nonprofit organization Books for Troops. He collects books - mostly paperbacks - and uses donations to ship them or to buy special requests.

One Army specialist asked for books on cars and Shakespearean poetry. An Air Force technical sergeant working in a hospital outside Baghdad requested romance novels to get her mind off the suffering she sees each day.
