Sheriff: Fake salesmen offering free Tide to get inside of homes

OHIO COUNTY, IND (FOX19) - The Ohio County Indiana Sheriff's Office is warning residents in the area to be on the lookout for three men in a white van trying to sell a vacuum cleaner and offering free Tide detergent.

"Yesterday we received reports of a white, Dodge van with possible Ohio license plates on Aberdeen Road stopping at multiple residences," the sheriff's office wrote on their Facebook page.

"Three white males were traveling in the van and would stop at houses and let two of the males out while the driver remained in the vehicle. The males would offer the homeowner a free bottle of Tide detergent and attempt to get inside the residence by trying to sell a vacuum cleaner. The males asked odd questions such as if the home owner had dogs and how big the dogs may be. They would ask several times to come into the home."

TJ Reeder said he was approached by the men a few weeks ago.

"They were dressed in suits and they were untucked and half the jacket was tucked in. They didn't look professional," he said.

The sheriff's office states the driver of the van is an older white male and the two suspects that are with him are in their 20's.

The white van also has an American Flag sticker on the back window. There is also a dent on the drivers side door.

"It is unknown what their true motive may be, but it sounds as if they are trying to case houses for possible future burglaries. If you see this van or any other suspicious vehicle, please report it to the Ohio County Sheriff's Office at 812-438-3636 or 911 if it is an emergency. Beware of anyone who seems extremely interested to get onto your property or into your home and do not accept any item that you may be unsure about," the sheriff's office post on their Facebook page says.
