CLEVELAND (WOIO) -

A 4-year-old boy was shot in the head in an apparent road rage incident overnight, Cleveland police said early Monday.

The child was in a vehicle with his mother in the area of West 28th Street and Division Avenue when she honked her horn to pass a vehicle blocking the road, according to police.

The mother told officers the vehicle started following her onto Interstate 90 about midnight, police said.

She said two men were inside the car and at least one of them shot at her on the interstate near Dead Man's Curve, police said.

The woman told officers she found her 4-year-old child suffering from a gunshot wound to his head.

Police say she exited the interstate at East 55th Street and contacted Cleveland EMS.

The child was taken to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital for treatment.

He is in serious condition and underwent surgery to remove bullet fragments, according to police.

Investigators are looking for a white four-door Pontiac with tinted windows they say was involved in the shooting.
