Texas Prepares For Emily

South Texas prepares for Emily, hopes for course change

Forecasters can't say for sure exactly where Emily will crawl ashore, but south Texas residents are preparing for the hurricane.

A Cameron County emergency leader says wind and rain should hit the area this afternoon, with landfall tonight or tomorrow morning. The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Emily could keep moving northwest into Texas or shift west into Mexico. The county official says everyone is "praying for that turn."

Cameron County is on the coast right next to the border with Mexico. The head of emergency communications says waiting for Emily is "just like having a baby." He adds, "You know it is coming, but you don't know what to expect." Some residents welcome rain. A South Padre Island restaurant owner says a persistent drought has his yard "kind of crunchy."

A hurricane warning is in effect for a roughly 40-mile stretch of Texas coastline. And a hurricane watch goes farther.
