Car Trunk Deaths

New Jersey boys who died in car trunk were reportedly alive during police search.

Three New Jersey boys who died in a car trunk last month reportedly suffocated slowly and were alive at least 14 hours after police began searching.

An attorney for one of the children's families tells The New York Times the time frame is part of an autopsy report that prosecutors shared with him. The time of death is crucial because of the possibility of a lawsuit. The attorney says responsibility for the deaths is now "squarely on the shoulders" of police.

The boys -- ages five, six and eleven -- disappeared from a Camden yard where they were playing. Authorities looked for two days before the father of one of the boys found them dead in the trunk just feet from where they'd been playing. Their deaths were ruled accidental.

A report on the search, including why searchers never looked in the car trunk, is due next week.
