SHARONVILLE, OH (FOX19) -

A Hamilton County SWAT team officer shot and killed a family dog during an early morning drug raid in Sharonville Monday.

No other injuries were reported.

"During operations such as this, the lives and safety of everyone present is our primary concern," Sharonville police posted to their Facebook page after FOX19 NOW contacted them and asked for details about the raid and shooting.

"Sadly, while executing the search warrant, a dog at one of the residences aggressively confronted officers, leaving them no choice but to use force to protect themselves. Unfortunately, the dog did not survive."

The officer and the agency he works for were not immediately identified.

Two people are in custody and facing several drug-related charges after the SWAT team helped Sharonville police serve two search warrants at two separate residences about 5 a.m., said Amy Williams, Sharonville police spokeswoman.

Police, the SWAT team and D.A.R.T. (Drug Abuse Reduction Task Force) were on scene for several hours Monday morning in the 10000 block of Sharondale Road and the 10000 block of Thornview Drive, she said.

A fire crew was called about 5:15 a.m. to the Sharondale Road location to help police ventilate a building after a "flash bang" device was used, creating a large amount of smoke, Hamilton County dispatchers confirmed.

Acting on tips from residents, police said they searched the residences after an extensive investigation.

Two people were taken into custody, one at each location, Williams said.

"They have been our eyes and ears, proving that cooperation between the police and our community is the foundation of a safe neighborhood. THANK YOU," Sharonville police wrote on their Facebook page.

Derek Smith, 27, was charged with five counts of trafficking in drugs.

Court records show he is accused of dealing marijuana.

Josey Glass, 25, was found hiding in the Thornview Drive residence, police said. She was arrested on a felony probation violation warrant.

Both are scheduled to go to court Tuesday morning.

The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed, Williams said.
