Bush to announce Supreme Court nominee in speech to the nation tonight
The nation will know tonight who President Bush is tapping to fill the vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court. The White House says Bush will make the announcement at 9 p.m., Eastern time.
There's no word on the identity of the nominee. But Washington has been abuzz today with the name of Judge Edith Clement of the U.S. Court of Appeals in New Orleans. When asked earlier if she's his pick, President Bush smiled and deflected the question.
This will be the president's first chance to place a justice on the high court. The vacancy stems from the retirement of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
