Five skimmers have been found and removed in Butler County since July 13, which includes two in the latest sweep this week.

In all, 18 illegal credit card skimming devices have been pulled from Butler County fuel pumps, according to Butler County Auditor Roger Reynolds.

“Credit card thieves will continue using skimmers as long as they have easy access to the pumps. The fuel station owners can prevent this criminal activity by improving the locks on their gas pumps,” Reynolds said in a news release. “If the pump looks 20-30 years old, then you should expect the lock to be easily breached.”

Security cameras have been placed inside pumps to help identify the criminals.

Reynolds said Marathons and Mobils are the easiest targets. 11 of the 18 skimmers have been found at these stations. Skimmers have also been found at two BPs, two Shells and two Sunoco stations.

Kroger and Thorntons fuel stations appear to be the most secure.

“If you continue to buy gas at this location with a credit card, keep a close watch on your statement,” Reynolds said.

In an effort to keep the pumps as safe as possible from fraud, Reynolds has had additional inspectors on duty since June of 2016. They make weekly skimmer checks of every gas pump at around 100 stations in the county.

The auditor gave the following tips for consumers:

  • NEVER use a debit card when paying for gas at the pump. Thieves can steal PIN numbers.
  • Frequent stations that have newer pumps. Many stores now feature pumps that shut down when accessed by unauthorized persons.
  • Report any unusual activity or anything that looks out of place.
  • Monitor monthly bank and credit card statements for fraudulent charges.
  • Use cash or prepaid cards to pay for purchases whenever possible.
  • If you believe you have been a victim of a skimmer scam, notify local law enforcement and your credit card issuer immediately.
