The Boone County Public Library has 1,000 pairs of eclipse glasses to give away to those who attend their viewing party Monday.

“Because we only received 1,000 pairs of glasses, for a county of 130,000 people, we made the decision to give them out the day of the eclipse to the people who are in our buildings for the eclipse viewing party,” the library posted on Facebook.

The glasses will be split between the county’s five library branches. Interested participants need to be at the library at noon on Monday.

The moon will be first visible in front of the edge of the sun around 1 p.m. The Maximum Eclipse in the the Tri-State (91 percent) will happen around 2:29 p.m.

The library expects glasses will go fast and only one pair is available per person. The library will have additional materials to make your own pinhole viewer.

Thomas More College will also have extra solar eclipse glasses. 700 pairs will be on-hand for those at the campus viewing party.

The public is invited to watch the eclipse at Thomas More’s BB&T Observatory where the telescopes will be outfitted with special filters.
