Justice O'Connor gone fishin'

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor was out fishing when the White House tried to get in touch with her yesterday to give her a heads-up that President Bush had picked someone to replace her.

She was out with in the Idaho Panhandle with federal district judge Robert Whaley. He tells The Seattle Times they were out of cellphone range when the White House tried to call.

As a result, he says, O'Connor learned of the nomination of John Roberts over the car radio as they returned to Spokane. He says her reaction was to say "He's confirmable."
