GOSHEN, OH (FOX19) -

The funeral will be held Wednesday for a 13-year-old Goshen High School student who died after a heart transplant.

Peyton West passed away last week, on Thursday, his first day of school.

Hundreds turned out Tuesday night to pay respects to his family at his visitation at Goshen High School.

Peyton was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.

HLHS is a birth defect that is caused when the left side of the heart does not form properly.

In March, he received a heart transplant, and then learned he was leaving the hospital in July.

"He's a warrior through and through," Peyton's father Corey West said.

Peyton survived a 12-hour transplant surgery and came out with the heart of another young warrior, 12-year-old Derek Cisnero.

Derek's organ donation sparked a visit from the Iowa family.

"It gives them comfort and they're happy because that's what god wanted," Derek's mother Blanca Cisneros said.

In Derek's memory, Peyton's mission was to get healthy enough to return home, which happened four months after surgery.

From the beginning Peyton just wanted to get back to school.

Instead of making class that day it was the young warrior teaching us the lessons: Smile through your sorrows, cherish your time together and he taught us the size of your heart in no way reflects your capacity for love.
