EDGEWOOD, KY (FOX19) -

A Kenton County School District teacher accused of bringing a loaded gun to Turkey Foot Middle School will not be charged.

Police say they were called Aug. 17 in reference to a report of an employee who had brought a gun to the school.

Though knowingly bringing a firearm onto school property is felony offense, the Kenton County commonwealth attorney says there's no probable cause to believe it was done knowingly on Aug. 17.

The employee in question has been a teacher for 21 years and has no criminal history. Commonwealth officials say there is no known disciplinary history with her employer, and that she is legally licensed to carry concealed deadly weapons.

School was not in session the day in question.

Commonwealth officials say the teacher likely forgot to remove a gun she'd been using for personal protection all summer from her purse before entering the building. They say she was at the school for in-service training.

Commonwealth officials say that while the teacher was attending training, another staff member unlocked her classroom to install computer hardware. They say this allowed a juvenile, who is not a student at the school, to enter the classroom and enter the teacher's purse.

Police say the juvenile lied repeatedly about the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the gun, but eventually admitted to removing it from the purse and taking bullets out of the weapon.

The juvenile then tried to flush the bullets down a school toilet, officials said.

Officials say the unnecessary alarm caused to students, parents, and other faculty was unfortunate but not within the control of police or prosecutors.

The employee was placed on administrative leave after the incident.
