MONROE, OH (FOX19) - A missing firefighter has been found dead in Butler County.
Springfield Township Chief Robert Leininger confirmed that Lt. Jeff Leininger's vehicle was found in the parking lot of the Kroger on Heritage Green Drive Friday afternoon.
Chief Leininger said Lt. Leininger's body was found inside the truck.
Springfield Township he died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
"Jeff was a valued member of the Springfield Township Fire and EMS Department for over 21 years. We are all heartbroken by today's news. He was a beloved member of our Springfield Township family. We extend our deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers to Jeff's family and to the men and women who worked closely with him in providing life safety services to our community" said Township Administrator, Michael Hinnenkamp.
He was last seen Wednesday morning at his Springdale home.
Thursday, Springdale Police said they were concerned he may hurt himself. His wife called Springdale Police after finding a note from him and two guns missing, Chief Leininger said.
"He's been a very valued member of our community, been a very valued member of our department and we don't really care about the circumstances, we just want Jeff to come home," said Township Administrator Mike Hinnenkamp.
The Butler County Coroner's Office is investigating.
