A man in Newport claims he was stabbed trying to defend a woman from getting beaten up by her boyfriend. Now, police are searching for the suspect who they said left the scene before they arrived.
The victim said he asked the suspect to stop punching the woman who was on the ground. He said once he began to intervene in when he was attacked. After being stabbed multiple times, he said the suspect ran off.
Grover Johnson said he was stabbed protecting a woman at a party in the 1100 block of Central Ave. in Newport.
"And when I walked out back... this guy had a girl on the ground and was punching her. He had a knife in his hand," he said.
Police believe Johnson was stabbed about seven times.
"I thought I was going to die right there and a lot of stuff goes through your mind," he said.
Police said the incident happened on Saturday around 8 p.m.
"Patrol officers responded to that area and determined they had a crime scene. Several people involved were heavily intoxicated and one male subject was stabbed," Det. Dennis McCarthy with the Newport Police Department said.
Johnson said he had only met the man who stabbed him once before. He said when he saw the woman helpless he had to do something.
"All I wanted him to do was to stop hurting her. He was beating her closed fist and had that knife in his hand. I didn't know if he had already stabbed her or what," he said.
The woman was not stabbed, but Johnson was rushed to the hospital. He said he has lost use of his hand.
