Goetta fans may grow with TV, festival
Philadelphia has cheesesteaks, Seattle has coffee and Cincinnati has goetta, a blend of pork, beef, steel-cut oats and spices that is totally foreign to most outside southwest Ohio. But ask natives of Cincinnati and northern Kentucky about it and they're likely to start debating the merits of goetta burgers versus goetta omelets. Goetta historians say the dish originated in Germany and used to be more of a porridge consistency.
Today it tends to look more like meatloaf, and its fans remain extremely loyal. Goetta lovers are hoping a segment of "Taste of America" scheduled to air tomorrow on the Travel Channel and the annual Goettafest scheduled this weekend in Newport, Kentucky., will draw more devotees to the food. Steve Hess of Falmouth, Maine, says he grew up eating goetta in Florence, Kentucky, and buys it when he visits the area or orders it by mail.
