CINCINNATI (FOX19 NOW/AP) - - One of Ohio's first pot farms will be Butler County.
On Friday, state officials released the list of 11 companies approved for the medical marijuana program.
Hemma LLC will run a grow operation in a warehouse off Salzman Road in the city of Monroe. The plot will be about the size of a tennis court and it could be months before they start their first crop.
The 11 growers would cultivate up to 3,000 square feet. That's a small portion of the anticipated cultivation. Up to a dozen larger growers for sites up to 25,000 square feet are expected to be announced later this month.
These companies will get provisional licenses but can't immediately begin growing marijuana. They must first get their businesses operational and have a state team visit their facilities.
The 11 chosen growers applied for sites in Butler, Clinton, Fairfield, Franklin, Lorain, Lucas, Meigs, Montgomery, Portage, Stark and Summit counties.
