Taxi Safety

Cincinnati mayor wants bullet resistant glass in taxis

Cincinnati Mayor Charlie Luken says he wants taxis in the city to have bullet-resistant glass between the driver and back seat passengers. T

he proposal comes in the wake of a cab driver's death. Timothy Deger was shot to death July 19th in Green Township, where he had driven three people he picked up in Avondale. The passengers remain in jail charged with robbing and killing Deger. Luken met yesterday with the owners of United Cab and Towne Taxi -- the company for which the slain driver worked. The companies want the city to mandate the glass.

They also discussed installing satellite tracking systems in the cabs that would notify police of a taxi's location in case of trouble. Luken says he wants the city to help cab companies pay for the new safety measures.
