US military launches offensive in western Iraq in bid to disrupt insurgents
The US military and its Iraqi allies have launched a new offensive in western Iraq. About one-thousand Marines and Iraqi forces are involved what they're calling Operation Quick Strike.
They're trying to disrupt militants and foreign fighters in the Euphrates River valley. The Marines say the operation began Wednesday. Today, US and Iraqi troops moved into the city of Haqlaniyah.
Residents say American and Iraqi forces have cordoned off the city and are searching house by house. American warplanes have been flying over and a number of heavy explosions have been heard. Witnesses say 500-pound bombs have been dropped in the area.
