CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

The Mason High School community is dealing with the loss of a student, and the school district says this is no time to poke fun at a teen's suicide.

Three female students who were joking around in a department store bathroom recently decided to post a mock hanging video on social media. The video shows toilet paper around the girls' necks, which is suspended from the ceiling.

"You know, this is one of those incidents where you just want kids to understand the impact of social media and using good judgment," said Tracey Carson, a Mason City Schools spokesperson.

There have been four suicides in the Mason School District in the past five years. The most recent happened this past weekend when a female sophomore took her own life.

The district says the girls who recorded this video had no idea one of their schoolmates died so recently.

"The girls are horrified by the impact of the video and we know suicide is never a joking matter," said Carson.

The district says the girls were trying to copy a girl they saw on YouTube who was mock hanging herself in much the same manner.

Cathy Strunk, who runs a teen suicide prevention program at Children's Hospital, said this topic needs to be taken seriously.

"Don't laugh or joke about suicide because you are not making people feel safe to talk about it," she said.

The school district does not discuss disciplinary actions for its students. Since the video was not recorded at the school it's more than likely the parents will be responsible for dealing with the girls' actions.
