DYER, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a northwestern Indiana man and a dog have died after his vehicle was struck by an Amtrak train.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports 76-year-old Richard Christy was ejected from his vehicle and died at the scene of the Friday morning crash in the community of Dyer. One of two dogs in the car also was found dead and another was taken to a veterinary hospital.

The vehicle was in a nearby ditch and the train stopped about 800 feet down the tracks from the crash.
