Irene Strengthens

Irene strengthens into a tropical storm.

Irene has gone from a tropical depression to a tropical storm. Forecasters say it's moved closer to the East Coast, raising the possibility it could eventually hit the US as a hurricane.

Irene's top sustained winds have strengthened to near 40 miles per hour, giving it tropical storm status. Tropical storms have sustained winds of at least 39 miles per hour. At eleven-p-m Eastern time, Irene was about 680 miles south-southeast of Bermuda.

It was moving west-northwest near 13 miles per hour, and was expected to continue over the next five days in the general direction of the US coastline from Florida to the Carolinas.
