Hospital Diversion

Most southern Indiana ambulance patients do not get to choose which of two large hospitals they will be taken to, as officials often divert people to the place that has open beds.

Some say private hospitals in the area say their facilities would help reduce the time needed to take patients to other facilities if there is no room at Floyd Memorial in New Albany, Indiana or Clark Memorial in Jeffersonville, Indiana.

Patients with life-threatening illnesses are not diverted.

For Clark and Floyd counties, the issue has become part of a larger debate over the role the two publicly owned hospitals have in the communities.

Medical consultant James Wesp says private hospitals could give patients more options when no beds are available at public facilities.
