The defense called its first witness Wednesday in the Texas court-martial of an Ohio Army reservist accused of abusing two Afghan detainees in 2002.
Private First Class Willie V. Brand of Cincinnati is accused of beating the detainees at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. Both prisoners later died.
Brand's civilian attorney says Brand was not well trained and was simply following orders.
Today, the military jury heard from a former Army Reserve sergeant who worked with Brand at the base. He testified that the training the reserve military police officers received before deployment was inadequate and in his words "fuzzy."
Earlier today, the defense announced that Brand will not testify on his own behalf.
