AVONDALE, OH (FOX19) -

An 8-year-old boy was hit by a vehicle and critically hurt in Avondale Monday night, Cincinnati police said.

The child was found with life-threatening injuries in the 700 block of Greenwood Avenue near Reading Road just after 6:30 p.m., they said.

"It's rough for everybody. It's harder when a child gets struck because they're out playing," said Sgt. Michael Hudepohl. "It's warm. it's nice. The weather's good and they are children. They're just not always paying attention."

The boy was at a cousin's house and was crossing the street right to left when he was hit, according to police.

"He darted out between two vehicles and was struck by a car coming down the street," Hudepohl. "The vehicle has damage on the front right passenger side."

The child was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. At last check, he was listed in critical condition, police said.

The driver of the striking vehicle stopped and is cooperating with police, Hudepohl said.

The incident appears to be an accident, he said, and so far charges are not anticipated.

"Speed is not a factor. Impairment is not a factor," he said.

But, he added, the investigation remains ongoing and the Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office will have final say.

Police are reminding drivers and pedestrians to be cautious and careful.

"It's getting warmer out, so not only parents but kids and drivers need to pay attention. Kids will be out," the sergeant said.
