Lawsuit filed in girder collapse

The family of an Indiana construction worker killed last week when part of a bridge he was working on collapsed has filed a wrongful death lawsuit.

The lawsuit filed Monday in Cook County names the Dunnet Bay Construction Company. It claims the Glendale Heights-based firm was negligent in allowing the bridge collapse that killed Daniel Lopez, 33, of Munster, Indiana.

Several other workers were hurt in the accident on Illinois Route-394 in Lansing.

Attorney Louis Cairo says there was clearly a failure somewhere, and he asks how the collapse could have happened if everything was built according to plan.

It took crews more than a day to recover Lopez's body, which was trapped under a girder that fell Friday.

Representatives from Dunnet Bay weren't immediately available for comment.
