MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

Kathia Boatwright is keeping the faith, despite a host of hardships that could easily push her beliefs to the brink.

Boatwright is currently battling breast cancer, and her only daughter died suddenly, a couple months ago, leaving behind a loving husband and three children.

"It's hard to lose a child, but when you lose a child and don't even know why, just go to sleep and die, it doesn't make sense," said Boatwright. "I'm now trying to raise her children. How do you explain to a 5-year-old that Mommy is not coming back? I told her Mommy went to heaven and she said, 'can't we take a helicopter and go to her?'"

Despite the challenges the Mesa grandmother has faced, she still finds time to volunteer at her church and help others in need, like Patricia Carson, who has an assortment of health problems.

For the past year, Boatwright has taken Carson to doctor's appointments, brought her food and groceries, and provided much needed friendship.

Carson wanted to thank her, so she reached out to CBS 5 to Pay It Forward to a woman who always puts others first.

"I want her to realize how special she is to me," said Carson. "I really think she needs to be recognized."

A CBS 5 news crew was there when Carson showed up at Boatwright's house to give her $500.

"For every place you've taken me and for all the good deeds that you've done for me," Carson said. "You brought me back to life by bringing me meals and getting me water. Me [sic] and Channel 5 would like to Pay It Forward, and this $500 is for you. You've done so much for me, I want to show my appreciation, so I put you in for Pay It Forward with Channel 5."

"It's faith that keeps you going," said Boatwright. "This is unbelievable. I love this woman to death."
