A driver was seriously injured after a box truck smashed into a tree in southwest Charlotte Thursday afternoon.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the incident happened in the 10700 block of Granite Street.

It was a single-vehicle crash, with only the driver in the vehicle.

The driver was traveling north on Granite Street when police believe the person had some medical emergency, didn't slow down and drove into the tree.

Firefighters on the scene had to extricate the driver from the box truck.

The driver was transported to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, according to CMPD.

No further information was released.
