Probe Continues Over Preemie Deaths

A Tri-State hospital now says its intensive care unit for the most delicate premature infants won't take new patients until Monday.

University Hospital is continuing to investigate the deaths of two babies and cases of an intestinal disease among three others.

Health officials say it could take weeks to determine whether there's any common connection. And Dr. Steve Englender, director of epidemiology for the Cincinnati Health Department, says often in these sorts of investigations, you don't find anything.

The disease (necrotizing enterocolitis) can occur in up to 10% of the smallest preemies and attacks and even destroys a baby's intestines.
