What's New in Cosmetic Surgery, Fact and Fiction

Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction

This procedure combines ultrasound technology with traditional liposuction for removal of unwanted fat and body sculpting. High frequency sound waves transmitted under the skin through a hollow wand melts fat cells and release their liquified fat. Low pressure suction throught the wand then removes the fat cells. The ultrasound alone may be used at the same time to tighten surface skin from underneath. Once removed, fat cells do not reform. Therefore if diet and activity remain the same the result is expected to be long lasting. The advantages over taditional liposuction are numerous. There is less tisue trauma from the ultrasound than from high pressure suction. Thus there is less blood loss, bleeding and bruising. More fat can also be removed in some cases with increases skin retraction. It is also better in fibrous areas such as love handles, hips, tummys, and male breast tissue.

Lasers for Hair Removal

Lasers have been recently used to remove unwanted hair. Recently the FDA has approved our hair "LightSheer" removal laser. Studies show up to a 90% reduction of hair after three to five treatments. The laser works by emitting a light that is absorbed by the hair follicle. The laser treats the 70% of hairs that are in the growing phase. As hair changes from the resting to the growing phase more treatments are recommended. This usually occurs in 6-12 weeks. The treatment is almost painless feeling like a rubberband snap. There is little restriction to activities afterwards.

Endoscopy Smaller Scars and Quicker Healing

Endoscopic surgery allows plastic surgeons to use smaller incisions and thier patients to heal faster. Endoscopy used commonly on general surgery for gallbladder removal, orthopedic surgery for knee surgery, and gynecolgy for abdominal exploration, uses cameras and lenses on tubes to assist in surgery. The most common endoscopic cosmetic surgery is a forehead lift. It can also be used for tummy tucks, breast augmentation, and and some facelifts in the appropriate candidate. The goals are to reduce the size of the incisions and resulting scars. Also it helps to reduce the trauma to the tissues allowing the area to heal faster.
