PHILO, Ohio (AP) - In a community southeast of Zanesville, authorities say a 16-year-old high school student is facing criminal charges for bringing a .38 special revolver to school yesterday.
The Muskingum County Sheriff's office says while the gun wasn't loaded, the boy also had taken some bullets to his school in Philo.
The unidentified student is now being held in juvenile detention. The boy allegedly told officers he didn't know the items were in his backpack and that he was carrying them for protection after a recent run-in with a coyote.
The school district wants to expel the boy for at least a year.
It sent home letters to parents yesterday informing them that the incident was handled quickly.
