Miner Is Making "Progress" In Recovery

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - His doctor says the West Virginia mine explosion's sole survivor is making "progress in the right direction."

Randal McCloy remains in critical condition at Morgantown's Ruby Memorial Hospital.

Doctor Larry Roberts says McCloy is responding to commands to squeeze hands and made facial expressions toward his wife. Roberts says McCloy will remain under sedation because of his overall condition, but says he may decrease the sedation tomorrow and fully awaken McCloy. The doctor says McCloy is having some kidney problems, likely as a result of lying still for several hours and being dehydrated.

The 27-year-old McCloy is the youngest of the ten miners whose ages were known.
