As you can see in our television story, Northern Kentucky's own Steve Cauthen decided to become a jockey only because he didn't grow tall enough to be Johnny Unitas! But Steve's feats put him into the Unitas class. He was the last jockey to win the American Triple Crown, astride Affirmed in 1978. Then -- ironically, because he did gain a little weight -- Steve went where jockeys are bigger, and he won the British Triple Crown, also riding mounts for the Queen and the Queen Mum.
The kid who grew up in Covington and Walton, Kentucky now has a horse farm in Verona, where he lives with his wife, Amy -- also a Kentucky native -- and their three daughters.
