(COVINGTON, KY) -- A slip down an elevator shaft foiled the attempt of Kenton County inmate to escape on Memorial Day.

Edward Webster was found in the basement's elevator pit.

The Kenton County Jailer says that Webster was able to escape from the recreation yard by climbing the fence and cutting the wire.  He was aided fellow inmates Ronald Bowen and John Hill.

He then climbeded along the 10th floor of the jail and into the elevator shaft.

Webster was able to use the elevator cables to lower himself toward the ground but fell the last two stories onto the concrete at the bottom of the shaft.

The elevators were not in use on Memorial Day.

The jailor believes that Webster was gone from the yard for about 30 minutes before it was noticed he was missing.

The jail was put on immediate lockdown and Webster was found in the shaft.
