What began as a robbery at a store in the West End turned into a brief but wild car chase, followed by a crash, a shot fired, arrests, and a suspect found dead at his own hand.
The incident started Thursday night as a robbery at the Family Dollar store on Central Parkway. Two men with guns walked in. Police say it appeared they ran to a waiting getaway car after the robbery.
Within moments the police spotted a car near the store, and within moments after that the car crashed a few blocks away from the store.
Police reported shots fired during a subsequent foot chase. There was no report of police being injured, but after a few minutes police began a search for one of the suspects, who had reportedly shot himself. After a while he was found dead. Police said he had a gunshot wound to the stomach.
Police quickly arrested the driver of the car and a passenger. At least one of those two was injured and taken to the hospital. The SWAT team was called up at one point in case it was needed.
