Snow Tracks Help Lead To Suspect's Arrest

(NEWPORT, KY) -- A Newport man may think twice if he ever tries to pull off a robbery again in the snow.

Monday night just before 11:30 p.m., a suspect entered the Newport Travelodge Motel on York Street. Police say the suspect indicated he had a gun and would use it if the clerk didn't give him the money in the register.

After taking the money, the clerk said the suspect fled on a bicycle west toward Columbia St.

An officer in the area observed bicycle tracks in the snow leading to an apartment complex. Additional officers followed the traks and found an abandoned bicycle near a building in the 300 block of Chestnut Way.

Police then say footprints from the bike led to the interior hallway of the building and the carpet inside had snowy footprints leading to an apartment door.

The suspect, who has been identified as 32-year-old Wayne Simpson, was located in the apartment and was taken into custody. Clothing worn during the robbery and the money taken were also recovered. No weapon was recoverd, however, an item was believed to have been used to simulate a weapon in the suspect's jacket pocket.

Simpson has been charged with Robbery 1st Degree.
