(CINCINNATI) -- A man who was convicted of killing his girlfriend's 7-year-old son has been sentenced to 23 year to life in prison.

Fred Johnson was convicted of the beating death of Milton Baker back in 2006.

Johnson was the live-in boyfriend of Baker's mother, Latina Stallworth, and apparently had been helping him do his homework at their Freeman Avenue home when the beating took place on Aug. 10, 2006.

Johnson was sentenced by Judge Fred Nelson on two murder charges and three charges of endangering children. He received 15 years on each murder charge, served concurrently and 8 years on the endangering children, which will also run concurrently.

A jury spared Johnson from aggravated murder, meaning he could not face the death penalty,

Judge Nelson said Johnson, "deserves to spend the rest of his life behind bars."
