Owner of Home Where Fatal Fire Started Indicted on Drug Charges

(CINCINNATI) -- The owner of a home where a fatal fire took place two weeks ago has been indicted on drug charges.

Matt Cones was indicted on one count of illegal manufacture of drugs or cultivation of marijuana.

A marijuana growing operation was discovered in Cones' home on Squirrelsnest Lane. It was the site of fire that killed Colerain Township Fire Captain Robin Broxterman and Firefighter Brian Schira.

Investigation has revealed that the marijuana did not contribute to the cause of the fire. If it would have, Hamilton County prosecutor Joe Deters said he would have sought manslaughter charges.

The cause of the fire was a disfunctional fan in a cedar closet used to grow orchids.

"Although this marijuana grow operation was discovered under the most tragic of circumstances, this is the appropriate charge," said Deters.

Cones faces a penalty of probation or 6 to 12 months in prison if convicted.
